Hurricane Statistics Virtually, any region of the United States has a possibility of some natural disaster and hurricanes are one of those dangers. Citrus County has historically and technically been shown to be one of the least likely places in Florida for a major or, for that matter, minor hurricane. Statistically, the annual numerical factor of hurricane probabilities along the entire Gulf coast of the United States and the Florida peninsula ranges from 1-16. (16 being the highest possibility) Citrus County is designated a 6, compared to 15 for Dade County and 14 for southern Texas. Areas of Louisiana and Mississippi all rank much higher than Citrus County. The annual numerical factor of a major hurricane ranges from 0-7 for the same areas, with 7 being the highest. Citrus County is designated a zero. Geographically, Citrus County sits somewhat "tucked in" along the coastline, which may account for its seemingly hurricane-resistant position. |
